The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers a Bachelor of Science in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. The program is designed to prepare students to pursue a graduate degree in speech-language pathology, audiology or related field. In addition, the undergraduate degree prepares students to work as a speech language pathology assistant.
Program Mission
The Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) Program is committed to providing students with a comprehensive education in human communication and in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of communication disorders across the lifespan. The program provides undergraduate students with comprehensive pre-professional academic, observation, and clinical experiences required for entrance into a graduate program in speech-language pathology, audiology, or related field.
Graduation Requirements
The Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Bachelor of Science degree requires 120 credit hours.
- 36 hours of Bradley Core Curriculum
- 9 hours of communication
- 21 hours of FA, GP/WC/GS, HU, NS, SB, MI, QR
- 6 hours of BCC elective courses
- 9 hours of math/science beyond BCC QR and NS to meet BS degree requirement of 15 hours of math/science
- 21 hours of elective courses to fulfill the 120-hour degree requirement (a student may choose to pursue a minor).
- 45 hours of Major Coursework (see course list below)
- Writing Intensive designation- 2 courses (below) have that designation (These 6 hours are included in the 45 hours of Major Coursework listed below)

CSD will offer 2 elective courses. These 2 courses are not required for the major but do meet the Experiential Learning Designation. Students who plan to apply to a CSD graduate program will be advised to enroll in these two courses. For those students who do not plan to apply to a CSD graduate program may opt to enroll in EHS 301 Cooperative Education Or Internship in EHS to meet the Experiential Learning degree requirement.
If students plan to apply to any CSD graduate program, they must complete the following four courses with a “C” or better. These are not additional courses beyond the 120-hour degree requirement.
- 4 hours of biological science with a lab (also fulfills BS degree requirement),
- 4 hours of physical science with a lab (also fulfills BS degree requirement),
- 3 hours of social science (also fulfills BCC-SB requirement)
- 3 hours of statistics (also fulfills BCC-QR requirement)
