Artificial Intelligence (AI) Foundations (Minor)

The Foundations in Artificial Intelligence minor at Bradley is administered by an interdisciplinary group of faculty representing each of the colleges. The program is designed to introduce students to the ethical and responsible uses of AI as a tool for use in the workplace and in their everyday lives. It is also designed to introduce students to the basics of artificial intelligence from a technology standpoint (e.g., algorithms, LLM). The increasing presence of AI in the workplace and homelife requires an understanding of how AI can be used in a broad range of human endeavors. This requires an understanding of the tools available and their utility across disciplines. Given the way that AI can be used, the program is also designed to provide an understanding of the ethical and responsible uses of AI. The minor is designed to allow students to explore these areas and, where possible, to explore more specific examples of the use of AI in their own disciplines. By its very nature, understanding the utility of AI requires a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on academic fields including, but not limited to, the natural, social, and political sciences, economics, and humanities, and must draw insights from the fields of computational and data sciences and engineering.

With completion of the “Foundations in Artificial Intelligence” minor, students will

1. Have a basic understanding of the technology behind AI
2. Be able to apply critical thinking skills and ethical considerations in evaluating solutions generated with AI
3. Have a working knowledge of AI across a number of disciplines and understand AI's impact on current and emerging professions and career pathways

To receive a minor in the Foundations of Artificial Intelligence, a student must complete a minimum of 15 hours: 6 hours of required courses and 9 hours of electives. At least 6 hours of the total must be at the upper level.

• Each course must be completed with a C or better to count towards the minor.
• Up to three credit hours of an approved internship, research or study abroad experience may be substituted for one of the elective courses.
• Special topics courses, if applicable, may be approved by the program chair to count for a course.
• Only 9 credit hours of the Foundations in AI minor may also be part of the student’s major or minor course of study.
