Academic Objectives

The Management and Leadership Department curricula provide students with educational experiences in reasoning, problem solving, teamwork, and decision making so they are qualified to assume responsible positions in business and the public sector.

Specific departmental objectives include the following:

To provide students with the historical perspective necessary to understand the evolution of business within a global, social, political, economic, and technological environment;
To inspire students to explore new ideas and knowledge;
To help students develop an understanding of, and skill in, the practice of management;
To provide students with a foundational understanding of major management disciplines, including human resource management, operations management, and strategic management;
To develop well-informed individuals who understand their ethical and social responsibilities in business situations;
To enable students to understand the operation of business and economic systems; and
To develop students’ ability to think clearly, analyze carefully, and express ideas and conclusions logically

Programs

The department offers a Management and Leadership major, and minors in Human Resource Management and Management.

Student Organziations

The Management and Leadership Department hosts numerous student organizations, including campus chapters of the Society for Human Resource Management, Women in Business, and Future Business Leaders of America. These organizations provide students with invaluable opportunities to learn about future career paths, network with peers, and interact with business professionals.

Internship and Co-op Opportunities

Beyond the classroom, internships, consulting projects, and opportunities to work with business organizations provide students with hands-on experience and valuable networking opportunities. Information on internship and co-op opportunities is available through the Smith Career Center .
